Dominica (dom me neeka)
Much has happened since we last talked. We spent an active 3 days in St. Pierre, the northern most town in Martinique. Lou and I had a great dive at 80′ and met a couple from Paris. Donna and Sebastian came over for a beer and the 5 of us had very pleasant conversation. Their english is 10x better than our french. Sabastian spoke alot with his hands and knocked over 2 drinks.
Later we met a friendly local, Lamordie, that volunteered to drive us all around St. Pierre. He took us up to the mountains where we walked along a 2.5 mile canal built by slaves over 200 years ago. It was the water supply to 5 suger factories and rum distilleries. The canal still flows as well as it did back then. Lamordie’s english was poor but made that up in enthusiasm.
We cleared out of Martinique and had a brisk sail north to Dominica. The winds were 25 mph and the swells were 12 feet. We were going too fast to fish but saw two sperm whales in compensation. One was so close I had to turn to avoid hitting it. Dominica is an unspoiled island with lots of natural beauty. We hired Poncho to drive us around. He took us to several great waterfalls and a narrow underground gourge that we swam in. It was spectacular. Uploaded some photos but they do not come close to doing justice to the plants, rivers and mountains that are here. Tomorrow we dive again and start heading towards Guadaloupe to pick up new crew and throw off my sister, Yvonne 😉 Steve
