Exumas

Zoomed up through the Exumas, which are in the middle of the Bahamas. They are a long thin necklace of islands with 5000′ deep water on the east and 15′ deep sandy banks on the west. Stopped at my favorite places from the sailing sabbatical back in 2002. At Staniel Cay, snorkled at Thunderball Grotto. A beautiful rock cavern that you have to swim under the entrance to get inside. Holes in the ceiling let shafts of sunlight play on the water’s surface for a magical effect. Went to Pig Beach where 2 large pigs come out to greet you. They turned up their noses at the lettuce I threw them.

Next was Warrick Wells, a very well run marine preserve. The photos with the clear water is there. Saw spotted eagle rays, lizards and many birds. The weather was windy and chilly, so I did not spend any time in the water. (Not that I was worried about “shrinkage” 🙂

After Warrick Wells was Norman’s Cay. It was once owned by a famous drug dealer. The photo of the plane in the water is one of his deals gone bad. Had a great hamburger at McDuffs. The final stop in the Exumas was Alllen’s Cay. The only inhabitants are iguanas. Was only able to coax out one for a photo op.
