Bahamas
Since sailing 270 miles from the Turks and Caicos to the Exumas (southern Bahamas) on my own, I have developed a strong respect for the Around Alone sailors. I have just one question for them: WHY? It is much more fun and safer with people. I was constantly aware that with the autopilot on, if I fell off, the Bella Gatta would probably make it home without me. Each evening I would anchor in beautiful quiet harbors and head back out to sea at first light. Each harbor has a coral reef to navigate through. It is intimidating to pass through these narrow breaks in the reef with big swells crashing on either side and no bouys to guide you:O
Have stopped along the way at Mayaguana, Acklins Is. and Long Is. (twice since it is a very long island.) Presently, I am anchored in Elizabeth Harbor off of Georgetown on Great Exuma Island. It is a harbor the size of Charleston Harbor with at least 300 boats! With so many boats it has become a true cruising community. There are all kinds of services and activities for the mariner; dinghies zipping everywhere and a 30 minute broadcast on the VHF each morning for weather and announcements. A big gale blew in last night and the Bella Gatta is rocking and rolling at anchor. I had hope to head north again on Monday but may have to wait out more settled weather. First weather delay in 4 months, so I cannot complain, especially since there is so much to do here. Guess I’ll adapt 😉 Steve
