Our Cuba Adventure Begins
The last unexplored cruising destination in the West Indies. With over 2000 miles of coastline, 289 beaches and pristine coral reefs, it is an island time forgot. Sailing there is akin to turning your boat into a time machine.
I have always been mystified by Cuba, never understood how a communist country could be so passionate about life. It has a history that reads like a Hemingway novel and has been the ” forbidden fruit ” for me since I started sailing.
Often I am asked: Why Cuba, why now? Why not wait until the path is well paved?
Contrary to most belief, the US embargo is still in full force. I had to get clearance from 3 different government agencies to avoid making this a covert operation. Even getting insurance was a lesson in patience. But after two of my closest sailing buddies passed away, I am certain now is the time since there is no promise about tomorrow.
So, please follow along and share some of the adventure with us. My sailing catamaran, SummerSalt, just finished a 5 year charter contract in the Northern Bahamas and we will start our journey to Cuba on November 19th. We plan to be in Cuba by Thanksgiving and will sail about 1000 miles before seeing US shores around New Years.
Anita London will be first mate. Her boundless positive energy and a great talent with setting the anchor, makes for a wonderful experience. We promise to upload the good, the bad and the ugly. The stuff you do not see in the travel magazines. The whole purpose is to have you along with us and not to make you jealous.
Anita and I appreciate all the support from you in getting ready for this big adventure. My patients and staff have been very positive even in the face of the inconvenience it may cause them. Since we cannot bring each of you a Cuban cigar, take this blog as an alternative souvenir.
All the best,
Steve Michel and Anita London
